I drove away from Shane’s pretty confident my hypothesis that he and Bethany had conspired to kill Rob was correct. But I didn’t feel great about that. I wasn’t a hundred percent sure that I would’ve done things differently, given the loathsome creature that Rob was. Though I was glad that my faith in Erin was justified. I believed without reservation her accusation that he’d sexually harassed her and created a hostile work environment. I’ve been in similar situations a time or two—most women have. But as a general rule, we don’t kill our bosses because of it. You either suck it up until you’re in a position to leave—which I don’t recommend, the stress is almost unbearable—or you report it and face the fallout. Unfortunately, there’s almost always fallout.

It was only 11 a.m. And already I had the case solved. I love the smell of vindication in the morning. I couldn’t wait to tell Coop. Who’s getting too far out over her skis now?

Then I reined myself in a little. I wouldn’t be able to say anything to Coop just yet. Gabe was trying to build a defense strategy, and Coop was not on our team on this one. I’d have to be satisfied with keeping the thrill of victory between Gabe and me for a while.

I called Gabe to update him. It went to voicemail, so I just hit the highlights and told him to call me for more details on the amazingly good news I had for him.
